Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) is a comedy about two gold-digging dames who sing and dance, go to Paris, get mixed up with millionaires and paupers, and live happily ever after. Best friends Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), travel to Paris via Transatlantic ship. They are pursued by a private detective hired by Lorelei's fiancé's disapproving father to keep an eye on her -- as well as a rich, enamoured old man and many other doting admirers. The film is based on a 1949 musical from the 1925 novel by Anita Loos. It features plenty of memorable musical numbers, including the iconic "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend." The film was directed by the incomparable Howard Hawks, with music by Jule Styne & Leo Robin, Hoagy Carmichael & Harold Adamson and Lionel Newman. 91 minutes. Technicolor.

Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin collaborated on the script. Gilliam and Jones served as co-directors.

Joe and Jerry (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) are two hapless Chicago musicians who inadvertently witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. While fleeing the scene of the crime, they are seen by the gangland killers so they quickly decide to go on the lam disguised as musicians in an all-female orchestra. Their masquerade works perfectly but there are complications: Joe falls for the band's kooky lead singer, Sugar Kane (Marilyn Monroe), Jerry meets an amorous millionaire who won't accept "no" for his marriage proposal, and the band ends up in Miami where Joe and Jerry encounter the mobsters on their trail. The film was directed by the always-funny Billy Wilder, much of it on location at the famous Coronado Beach Hotel. 120 minutes. Black and white.

The Big Lebowski

A comedy written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. Jeff Bridges stars as Jeff Lebowski, an unemployed Los Angeles slacker and avid bowler, nicknamed "The Dude." After a case of mistaken identity, The Dude is introduced to a millionaire also named Jeffrey Lebowski. When the millionaire Lebowski's trophy wife is later kidnapped, he commissions The Dude to deliver the ransom to secure her release. The plan goes awry when The Dude's friend Walter Sobchak (John Goodman) schemes to keep the full ransom. Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, Julianne Moore, Tara Reid, and John Turturro also star in the film, which is narrated by a cowboy known only as "The Stranger", played by Sam Elliott.

Urinetown

One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, "Urinetown" is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. A hero decides he has had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom.
