Doctor Zhivago

A Russian epic, the movie traces the life of orphan-turned-surgeon-poet Yury Zhivago (Omar Sharif) before and during the Russian Revolution. Married to an upper-class girl (Geraldine Chaplin) who is devoted to him, yet in love with an unfortunate woman (Julie Christie) who becomes his muse, Zhivago is torn between fidelity and passion. Sympathetic with the revolution but shaken by the wars and purges, he struggles to retain his individualism as a humanist amid the spirit of collectivism.

The film is based on the Nobel Prize winning book of the same name. David Lean, on the heels of the triumph of Lawrence of Arabia, won five Oscars for this adaptation — Art Direction, Cinematography, Costumes, Music and Writing — and was nominated for five more — Supporting Actor, Director, Editing, Picture and Sound.

Directed by David Lean. 197 mins, plus a 15-minute intermission. Rated PG-13. Color. 2.35 : 1.
