McIntosh County Shouters

McIntosh County Shouters
The ring shout tradition of the Georgia coast was formed during times of slavery. A compelling fusion of dance, call-and-response singing and percussion (consisting of hand-clapping and beating a stick on the floor), the ring shout has African origins but also contains strong elements of Christian belief. National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) National Heritage Fellows, the McIntosh County Shouters are the foremost practitioners of this tradition, and have become SMF favorites. They are also performing for local schoolchildren grades K-2 as part of SMF’s new Musical Explorers curriculum which uses regional musical traditions to incorporate music into general classroom studies.
